Directors Note
The nice thing about tweenhood is that it’s a moment of transition that’s broadly recognized. People get it, you’re going through puberty, your body’s changing, you’re learning how to be a person in new and confusing ways every single day. It doesn’t make it easier, but at least there’s some overarching idea that you can contextualize your experience within, and all of the adults around you have been through it themselves (even if they’ve forgotten what it was like by now). The bad thing about tweenhood is pretty much everything else.
At twelve or thirteen, everything is so big. Everything is the biggest thing you’ve ever experienced. That rough science test is your first time really failing, that rejected invite to the dance is your first heartbreak, that friend breakup is your first time grieving. It’s also a time when a lot of us learn to edit ourselves to fit the social definitions around us. When you’re raised as a girl, like the characters in this play, you encounter a strict set of expectations: be pretty, don’t be too loud, get the boys to like you, be sexy but not too sexy, be smart but not too smart. We’re taught to cut out pieces of ourselves that don’t fit the mold and reshape the rest to fit what we’re expected to be. It’s a lot of pressure to put on someone who’s still figuring out how to use a tampon.
I hope Marked Green at Birth, Marked Female at Birth will give you an opportunity to return to the tween inside you and feel a little extra softness for that version of yourself. What parts of you did you leave behind at 13? Maybe take a few minutes to give your old favorite songs another listen, dig out your old Webkinz, and remember who you were before you were told who to be.
Special Thanks!
